Heavy rains in the last week of September 2009 caused flash floods in north Karnataka and the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, affecting nearly two million people and claiming 210 lives.  Of the two million, 1.4 million people affected are from Andhra Pradesh. Most of these displaced people are poor and have to depend on government aid to rebuild their homes. With the already high rates of malnutrition in the areas, the situation is particularly serious for young children.

SERUDS is one of the leading NGOs in Andhra Pradesh. It has provided assistance to 7500 families of flood affected victims in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh. Apart from emergency relief, it has set up Crèche Program for children among flood affected families with the following objectives :

Search Engine Marketing to the rescue of women micro-entrepreneurs and flood victims
Wednesday, 07 October 2009 00:00

Most of the smaller NGOs in India do not have an online presence and rely solely on direct contact or traditional advertizing to mobilize funds. SERUDS, a small NGO in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh India, has launched an ambitious online attempt to help poor women entrepreneurs and victims of floods that hit Karnataka and Andhra in October 2009.

Sai Educational Rural and Urban Development Society (SERUDS) is a non-governmental, non-profit social service organization working for an integrated development of women and children of vulnerable segment of the population in Andhra Pradesh.  SERUDS has partnered with Ananya SEO Services to launch a website and PPC Ad campaign.  The website  has sections on flood relief and women entrepreneurs; these describe the activities of SERUDS to help flood victims and poor women respectively. Online donation through secure payment gateway enables people to donate for a cause of their choice.

The floods affected 1.6 million people in Andhra, and submerged 400,000 acres of agricultural land. Most of these displaced people are now living on the roads and common lands and other higher areas mostly without any shelter and other basic needs. With stagnant water in most communities, combined with poor sanitation and inadequate water supply, there is a real risk for the outbreak of water borne diseases/ diarrhea, viral fevers etc.  With the already high rates of malnutrition in the areas, the situation is particularly serious for young children.

Designing a PPC campaign for collecting donations online is a challenge since people surf online for reasons not connected to donation, and an ad can be a distraction. However, with creative keywords and ads, SERUDS has performed well on click-through rates.

The website page on poor women features stories of women who have been deserted by their husband, or girls who are orphaned, or neglected.  Donors can sponsor them to buy stuff like sewing machines to help them earn livelihood.
